Suspended Floor Insulation
Suspended timber floors are common in older Irish homes — Georgian, Victorian, and early 20th-century properties often sit above a ventilated void designed to prevent damp. While effective in its time, this open airflow leaves rooms cold, draughty, and difficult to heat.
At Dada Flooring, we specialise in restoring warmth and efficiency to these period homes without compromising the building’s structure or character. Our insulation process is carefully tailored to ensure breathability, longevity, and a flawless finish.
Our Process: Detailed, Careful, and Built to Last
1. Lifting & Assessing the Existing Floor
We gently remove the original boards by hand, preserving as much of the existing timber as possible. Older floors can be fragile — our approach avoids unnecessary damage and ensures the boards are returned exactly as they were.
2. Installing a Breathable Membrane
A specialist breathable membrane is fitted across the joists.
This layer:
-
Blocks draughts coming up from the void
-
Prevents dust and cold air entering the home
-
Allows essential ventilation underneath, protecting joists from moisture
It’s the balance that older homes need: airtight above, ventilated below.

3. Fitting High-Quality Insulation
We install insulation between the joists — sized and cut precisely for a perfect fit.
Options include:
-
Rigid insulation boards
-
Mineral wool batts
-
Natural fibre/eco-friendly insulation
Each choice improves thermal comfort, reduces heating costs, and keeps the room warmer throughout the year.
4. Reinstalling & Repairing the Floorboards
Once insulated, we refit the floorboards with care. Any boards that are too damaged to go back are replaced with reclaimed timber chosen specifically to match:
-
Grain
-
Colour tone
-
Age and patina
This maintains the home’s character while improving performance.
5. Sanding & Refinishing
To complete the project, the entire floor is sanded using our dust-free systems, then finished with your choice of:
-
Clear varnish (matt, satin, or gloss)
-
Hardwax oils
-
Traditional oils
-
Stains and colour treatments
The floor not only performs better — it looks completely revitalised.
The Result
A warmer, quieter, draught-free room with a beautifully restored timber floor — all while preserving the heritage of your home.
You get:
-
Dramatically improved energy efficiency
-
Reduced heating bills
-
No more cold air rising through gaps
-
A stabilised, professionally refinished timber floor
-
Peace of mind knowing the structure can breathe safely
This is the perfect upgrade for period homes that need modern comfort without losing their authenticity.
